My journey towards a style
My Journey Towards a style
Many people ask me, what’s behind my work? ...And what is the process that I use?
I very rarely come up with a concept first; I prefer the work to take on a natural evolution.I explain that like all artists, the mood has to hit you right!
I find that these days my mood is to paint every spare minute that I get. I get home from work and pretty much get straight into it, sometimes up till the early hours of the morning, saying to myself, "oh 5 more minutes" when bedtime was a long time ago. Of course once the flow hits you it's very difficult to stop. I find myself dreaming about what my next brush stroke will be before get up in the morning and think about what color I should use in particular aspects of an art piece, whilst I'm at work.As I get older you may think that one might perhaps get tired, but I have found exactly the opposite. The more I experiment the more excited I get about the possibilities and about what the outcome will be. I put a lot of that down to the idea that change is a great thing. I have never been afraid of it, but rather welcome it with open arms. I have become passionate about my work and grateful to have finally found a style that works well for me.
I know it might be argued that a style is a style and that you, as an individual can only paint as you know how and this might be true, however I do not believe that this journey is as simple as that, I believe all individuals paths to be a spiritual journey. Paralleled with life. We probably only start to feel comfortable with our skin at middle age. It certainly hasn't been an easy road for me.
The idea that style is as linear as it is natural, asks more questions for me. In therapeutic self-realizations, you know it’s right, when it’s feels right, undisputedly so. So did the great artist of their time simply manifest their goods without any internal struggle or was there a journey of self-discovery towards finding their uniqueness? Is this nurture versus nature all over again?
How is it that someone like Picasso, skilled in so many areas ,can take his application of medium and then use his many styles to adapt it to the dynamics of a specific art movement, Does this draw him towards his love for abstraction. What is it that makes this his style?
In the same way that Monet chose Impressionism and Dhali the Surreal. Did all of these artists find their niche straight away or was there an inner battle to get there. Maybe their inner battles were resolved quickly, which is what makes them the smart ones. I have struggled with finding my own niche for many years. I experienced a long sabbatical from painting for about 10 years. It has only been the last 5 years, since coming to the states, that I have found my own style. It's a style that I am comfortable with and one that I hope people will enjoy looking at.
